“The Legacy of Alfred
Nobel: The Nobel Prize Laureates Project”
Linking students and teachers
for the New Millennium
Dear participants,
Our school is just celebrating
its 300th anniversary and we have decided to launch this project in order to
symbolically link our past and present with the new millennium. We will try to demonstrate
the extraordinary potential of the information technology in English language teaching
while exploring the legacy of Alfred Nobel and the fascinating stories of the Nobel Prize
Winners.
Alfred Nobel, who lived in the 19th
century and whose prizes honour the greatest achievements of the 20th century,
is pointing the way into the next millenium. Among the Nobel Laureates there are many good
examples that both teachers and students can follow. There are outstanding people who give
us confidence and faith in the power of good, as well as many remarkably intelligent and
courageous men and women who will always live in our hearts because of their willingness
to work and sacrifice for good of all mankind.
Our common duty and, we hope, our
pleasure will be to get to know them better during this project.
In this year’s part of the
project we will start from the very beginning – we will follow Alfred Nobel from the day
he was born till the moment his famous last will was made public. Then we will draw your
attention from the donor to his legacy – the Nobel Foundation, the Nobel Prizes and the
Nobel Laureates and their scientific, literary and political contributions. We plan to
continue developing the project in the following years focusing on some of the most
outstanding laureates: Ernest Hemingway, Martin Luther King, UNICEF, Pierre and Marie
Curie, Mother Theresa and Albert Einstein. We also intend to give our tribute to French
laureates in literature and to women Nobel Prize winners. We owe them all very much.
Our research on October 20 will
focus on the official website of the Nobel Foundation (www.nobel.se) because it is an excellent cultural and
educational resource with plenty of high quality information and thought provoking ideas.
We would like to thank the Nobel
Foundation team for letting us all benefit from their hard work.
Here are the
instructions:
- Send us an e-mail with a short introduction – a
few paragraphs about your country, home town, school and about individual participants of
this project. We are looking forward to hear about your everyday life, your interests,
ambitions and of course about all other things you want to share with us. It would be fun
to exchange photographs as well. If you have any questions, either for us or other
participants, just ask. We are all here to answer them. We will forward your introductory
messages to all other participants and inform you about their e-mail addresses as well.
- Read all the assignments and organize your work in
the way that suits you best. Follow the instructions and express yourself clearly and
concisely. We are sure that you are quite good at English and that you don’t make too
many mistakes, but we would like to remind you that both your fluency and accuracy will be
taken into consideration by the prize-awarding jury. You may consult dictionaries from
your reference library or search those which are on-line. Many of them are available at www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/rbeard/diction3.html.
Please, don’t ask your teachers to correct every single word ! Send us your
contribution, not theirs!
- There are ten types of assignments. You are
supposed to do the first part (assignments 1-6) by 7 p.m. GMT on October 20. We advise you
to be patient and persistent because they will help you gain plenty of useful background
knowledge.
- The first school that answers most of the
assignments correctly, will be awarded a prize. The winner will be announced on October
21, the day when Alfred Nobel was born 166 years ago.
- The second part of the assignments will go beyond
facts and will, we hope at least, get you more affectively engaged. There will be some
problems to solve and controversal topics to think about as well. You will be supposed,
among many other things, to create your own reports, posters and logos.
- The deadline for the assignments 7-10 is November
20. The best contributions will be published in our Cyber Magazine and in Cyber Gallery on
December 10 as a tribute to the Prize Awarding Ceremony which takes place on the
same date in Stockholm and Oslo!
- Finally, let us know whether you have the
necessary equipment for video conferencing and whether you are interested in a short live
discussion about our project or related topic on December 10.
- After that, we can continue to be keypals (or even
something more!) for as long as we wish!
Enjoy in your work, have fun while learning and don’t forget to send us your answers at kontakt@gymnasium-poseganum.hr
!
Good luck to all of you!
Best regards,
