It was founded in 1699, and it is one of the oldest educational institutions in Croatia. From 1761 to 1776 it was called Academia Posegana and it had two colleges – Liberal Arts College and Theological College. Many famous people attended our school. Kajo Agjić, Vjekoslav Babukić, Dragutin Lerman, Antun Kanižlić, Josip Eugen Tomić, Miroslav Kraljević, Matko Peić and Dubravko Jelčić are only some of them. They all in their own way contributed to the cultural and scientific development of our country. Grammar School in Požega accomplishes two curriculums, and in co-operation with Secondary School in Pakrac it also performs the curriculum for nurses.
In the school year 1999/2000 there are 20 classes with 625 pupils, and 370 of them are girls. In three classes of Medical school there are 126 pupils with 104 girls. There are 64 members of the staff. Grammar School has exceptionally valuable teachers’ and pupils’ library. There is also a large reference library, which can seat 40 people. Book stack is about 30,000 books. In 1997 the old building of our school was completely renovated after an earthquake in 1995. |
